Discerning The Truth

“The first to speak in court sounds right, until the cross-examination begins.”

Proverbs 18:17 NLT You must trust the word of God to aid you in discerning the truth.

They say God has a sense of humor. Well, I must admit, I laughed hysterically when I read this verse. But seriously, there’s a lot of opportunity for self reflection here.

Ask yourself if the things you say can withstand  the scrutiny of cross-examination?  If your speech is in alignment with God’s word, you should be safe. However, if you’re speaking according to your own understanding, your chances of being justified are extremely compromised.

Another thing to reflect on is how you respond to what others tell you. Vetting the truth requires wisdom and understanding. You must keep an open mind at all times. You must not be quick to accept their testimony just because you happen to agree.

Sometimes, people are just telling you what you want to hear. It’s your job, when you’re receiving information, to sort out the truth. Be sure to listen intently when others are speaking to get a clear understanding of what they say. If you spend time formulating your response while they’re speaking you may miss important details.

A good understanding of verbal and nonverbal information will help you sort out the truth. Then ask God to give you wisdom for the situation. Remember, there’s always two sides to every story.
