Discipline is defined as the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. It is a necessary tool used to help maintain order in society. Although some may consider punishment to be a negative reinforcement tool, it has proven critical to healthy behavior.
On your life’s journey God uses discipline to develop you spiritually. ”No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.” Hebrews 12:11(NLT)
Disciplinary tools will cause discomfort because they conflict with the desires of the flesh. However, if you are steadfast and endure, the disciplinary process will lead to rewards. By allowing divine discipline to order your steps, you reap the benefits of God’s many promises.
Discipline is used to develop your character and enhance the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22&23 (NLT) When you live life according to these virtues, the result of your obedience to God is a beautiful harvest filled with peace of mind.
