The reason why you do something matters. There may have been a situation where you may have done something that seemed to warrant appreciation or perhaps an apology. In either situation, the question on the mind of the recipient may not be how you did it, but more importantly, WHY you did it! There is a motivating factor for every action. Everything you do or choose not to do requires contemplation. Of course, the seriousness of the act or its ramifications will typically determine the level of thought you put into the decision making process.
The most important thing to remember is that despite your outward appearance, Christ inspects your heart and determines your motives. Therefore, it is crucial that you carefully consider your actions prior to taking them. You must do so understanding that your motives are what matter most to Christ.
“But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” Jeremiah 17:10 NLT
You may be able to deceive others, but because Christ is omniscient , he sees the heart. Any impure motives that may be hidden from the casual observer, can be clearly illuminated upon inspection by Christ. You will be rewarded and judged based on your motives.
Everything you do, whether it be for Christ or others, will be judged. It is imperative that you seek Christ first in all things, ask for wisdom, a renewed mind and a clean heart. Christ already knows your heart. You need His spirit working in you to make your hidden motives transparent to you so you can change.
So think before you speak or act and ensure your behaviors are in sync with Christ’s character. A pure motive should always be the heart of the matter!
